Yoga Strong Minute #6 – The Longevity Exercise

Samantha Harrison | OCT 30, 2025

"You do not stop moving because you grow old. You grow old because you stop moving.”
— Bernard Baruch

Did you know that being able to do this one movement can improve your life and health span, %FIRSTNAME%?

The one simple (but not easy) movement is the sit to rise exercise aka getting up and down off the floor without your hands (and ideally without your knees).

This is a simple assessment of physical fitness and functional ability, particularly for middle-aged and older adults.

A lower score on this test, indicating greater reliance on support, is associated with increased risk of mortality.

This “sit-to-stand test” isn’t just about longevity — it’s a simple, powerful way to check your mobility, balance, strength, and coordination all at once. Check out the study that was done here.

Try it now:

  1. Sit down on the floor.

  2. Stand back up without using your hands, knees, or other support.

  3. How’d it go?

SCORING:

The test is typically scored out of 10 points, with points deducted for using hands or knees for support or for an unsteady execution. A score of 8 or higher is generally considered good.

If that felt tough — don’t worry. That’s exactly the kind of functional strength and mobility we build in class. Every squat, lunge, warrior pose, chair hold, and balancing pose is helping you get stronger and more capable for real life.

Whether it’s chasing grandkids, hiking trails, or just feeling confident in your body — we train for life on and off the mat.

🧘‍♀️ Come practice with us!
