Yoga Strong Minute #7 – Re-thinking Hand Placement

“The best posture is the one that fits your body.” – Leslie Kaminoff
This morning, I had one of those great teaching moments — the kind that makes you fall in love with what you do all over again.
A student in class shared her struggle with push-ups (who can relate?) and couldn’t figure out why they always felt off. I took a look at her setup and asked her to sit up and relax her arms by her side so I could see her carrying angle.
If you've never heard of this, you're not alone.
Your carrying angle is the natural angle between your upper arm and forearm. Most people have some degree of outward angle, which means forcing your hands into a perfectly straight position from the shoulders (like we’re often taught in yoga or fitness) can actually work against your anatomy.

Once she adjusted her hand placement to line up with her arm structure — hands much wider with a slight turnout — it clicked.
Her push-ups felt smoother and more natural.
So if you've ever felt discomfort or strain in these movements, it might not be about strength or flexibility — it could just be about alignment that honors your structure.
See what happens this week if you adjust your hands to match your arm path — and let me know if you feel an “a-ha” moment of your own.
See you on the mat,
Samantha
